Why it matters

The announcement says the redesigns are meant to prevent production disruptions and address diminishing manufacturing sources. Lockheed reported third quarter results on Oct. 22, the day before the order was announced.

  • Lockheed reported Q3 sales of $20.7B, up 11%, and a record backlog of $292.0B.
  • Funding comes from the Air Force, the Navy and F-35 cooperative program partners.
  • The work is spread across El Segundo, Fort Worth and Clearwater.

What to watch

  • Whether more redesign orders follow for other obsolete F-35 components.
  • Whether further orders appear under the same basic ordering agreement.
  • How the work shows up in Lockheed's backlog and sales in coming quarters.
